Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report 2016

Good News

The good news is that apparently we are sharing less personal information on Facebook. Even though one doesn’t know if this is because of the awareness of the pitfalls of sharing personal information online, a change in user demographics, or just a fatigue with the way the platform functions, it still bodes well from a security perspective since making personal information public — and social media is a public platform irrespective of all our privacy settings — is a risk to our cyber-safety.

Bad News

The bad news though is that cybercrime is getting more and more sophisticated and showing no signs of abating. Quite the opposite, in fact. So says Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report 2016, released earlier this month. According to it, in the year 2015, there were 430.5 million malware pieces created—that is, almost 1.2 million per day. Add to that more than one zero-day vulnerability discovered per week (54 in the year). With cybercriminals becoming more innovative and security breaches rising, it makes getting online more dangerous than it has ever been.
